Torquatus Novellius Atticus received the surname "Tricongius" due to a remarkable feat involving wine. According to Pliny the Elder, Atticus was able to drink three congii of wine at a single draught. This impressive act took place in the presence of Emperor Tiberius, who was greatly astonished by this display. The term "congii" refers to a Roman liquid measure, and drinking three congii (approximately equivalent to 2.6 U.S. gallons) in one go earned him the nickname "Tricongius" source.
