Spirit Chief Skell is a prominent figure in Klamath legends. According to these legends, Skell was a mighty spirit and was the chief of the Above World (often referred to as the spirit of the sky). He is renowned for his connection to Mount Shasta and Crater Lake, both of which are significant landmarks in Klamath mythology.

Skell descended from heaven to the summit of Mount Shasta. He is often depicted as a protector of the Klamath people, engaging in a fierce battle with Llao, the spirit of the underworld, who resided beneath Mount Mazama (now Crater Lake). This legendary battle between Skell and Llao is said to have resulted in the creation of Crater Lake.
