The signal station on Little Round Top was abandoned during the Battle of Gettysburg primarily due to the tactical situation on July 2, 1863. As Confederate forces began their assault on Union positions, the Union troops needed to consolidate their defenses. Little Round Top was a critical high ground, and its defense became a priority. The signal station, which was initially used for communication and observation, was vacated to allow Union soldiers to fortify the position and repel the Confederate attack.
