Placido Maria Schiaffino was made a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII on July 27, 1885, during a consistory held in the Vatican. Before becoming a cardinal, Schiaffino was heavily involved in the Benedictine order and held significant positions within the Roman Curia. He received the title of cardinal deacon and the deaconry of Ss. Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia.
