Reference

During the 1882-83 tour, Ivo Bligh promised to "regain those Ashes," which was a reference to the famous mock obituary published after England was defeated by Australia at The Oval in 1882. This obituary lamented the "death" of English cricket and humorously stated that the body would be cremated, and the ashes sent to Australia. Bligh's mission during the tour was to bring back these symbolic ashes, which he successfully did by winning the test series 2–1 against Australia. He was then presented with a small urn, reputedly containing a symbolic representation of the ashes, by a group of Melbourne women, which included his future wife source.
