Mathew Ahmann played a significant role in the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. He was one of the ten chairmen of the event and delivered a speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, just minutes before Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Ahmann was also the executive director of the National Catholic Council for Interracial Justice, and his involvement highlighted the Catholic Church's participation in the Civil Rights Movement.
