In 1992, the Cunard Lines ocean liner Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) experienced a significant event involving a grounding incident. On 7 August 1992, the QE2 ran aground on uncharted rocks south of Cuttyhunk Island, close to Martha's Vineyard and the state of Rhode Island. The grounding occurred at depths of 33 feet and 34 feet in an area not marked on navigational charts, which resulted in the hull of the vessel sustaining a 74-foot gash on its starboard side.

The incident necessitated the evacuation of 1,815 passengers and most of the 1,000 crew members aboard the ship. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the event caused significant structural damage to the vessel. The ship ran aground shortly before 11 p.m. EDT and was eventually re-floated and taken for repairs.
