In 1924, the whaleship Wanderer, the last of New Bedford’s great whaling vessels, met a tragic end near Cuttyhunk Island. On August 25, 1924, the Wanderer left New Bedford for its final whaling voyage and anchored off Martha's Vineyard to wait out a storm. During the night, the ship broke loose from its anchor and was driven onto the rocks at Sow & Pigs Reef at Cuttyhunk Island by the storm, where it was completely wrecked.

Fortunately, the crew managed to escape and landed safely on Cuttyhunk Island. However, the ship itself was beyond salvage and was subsequently scrapped.
