Mormon Island was formed in 1848 when members of the Mormon Battalion, namely W. Sidney, S. Willis, and Wilford Hudson, discovered gold on the south fork of the American River while hunting deer. This discovery led to a rush of about 150 Mormons and other miners flocking to the site, which was quickly named Mormon Island.
The town rapidly grew to become a significant community during the Gold Rush era, reaching a population of over 2,500 residents by 1853. It featured several hotels, dry-goods stores, and many other establishments to support the miners and the burgeoning community.
Unfortunately, a fire in 1856 destroyed the town, which was never rebuilt.
